For generations, Australian pubs have been places where people gathered, worked, celebrated, argued, travelled, stayed and belonged.
Behind their verandahs, bars and weathered facades are stories of the people who built them, the publicans who ran them and the communities that grew around them.
Oak & Ale uncovers those stories and brings them back to life
It all began with my own family
My fascination with pub history began with my own family tree.
While researching my ancestors, I discovered that several of them and their siblings had been publicans in pioneering country towns throughout Australia during the 1800s. Suddenly, the names and dates in my family tree led me to some interesting stories.
There were licence records, newspaper advertisements, fires, court appearances, coroners’ inquests, community meetings and dinners. People arriving and departing with towns changing around them. I became just as interested in the places my ancestors had inhabited as I was in the ancestors themselves.
What stories had survived in old newspapers and archives that their descendants had never heard?
More than bricks and beer
A historic pub can tell us an extraordinary amount about the community around it.
Country hotels served both travellers and locals, and they also became meeting places, temporary homes, centres for entertainment and places where business and community life unfolded. And behind every hotel were people. Some left a substantial trace in the historical records, others appear only fleetingly.
Oak & Ale brings those fragments together to tell a richer story of the pub, its people and its place in Australian life.
Research and storytelling
Every Oak & Ale story begins with research.
Depending on the project, that may involve exploring historical newspapers, archives, maps, photographs, directories, family history records, licensing information and other surviving sources. But finding the facts is only the beginning.
The aim is to turn that research into something people actually want to read, explore and keep. It may be a story of an individual publican, the history of a hotel, an illustrated family piece, website content, a heritage display or a venue celebrating an important anniversary.
Illustrations bring the stories to life, while historical photographs and documents add another window to the past.

Some begin with my own family, others begin with an intriguing hotel or newspaper headline revealing stories too good to leave buried in the archives. Each is another small piece of Australia’s pub history rediscovered.
